NICU day 1 - on CPAP

So the first day in the NICU began the roller coaster ride!!! Avery started off doing ok for a 33 weeker. She quickly needed CPAP and was working really hard to breath. Her chest xray showed RDS (Respiratory Distress Syndrome) - so they decided to intubate her (put a breathing tube down) and give her surfactant (a medication to help the lungs). The initial idea was to put the tube down, give her the medication and remove it. Well... didnt happen. They decided to keep the tube in for a day and see if her chest xray improved. Avery had some big plans for herself on Tuesday - that night she self extubated. (pulled the breating tube out) She immediatly went back on CPAP.
